#GivingTuesday 2018 in Silver Spring

Black Friday. Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday.

Today is #GivingTuesday, celebrated on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving as a global movement that celebrates giving, generosity, and change for people throughout their communities. #GivingTuesday allows us to unite as one and to encourage more small acts of kindness.

Here are a few Nonprofits celebrating #GivingTuesday in our local community today:

Silver Spring Village

The mission of Silver Spring Village is to build and sustain a supportive network of neighbors helping neighbors remain in their own homes and be engaged in their community as they age.

Residents of various close-in Silver Spring neighborhoods serve on a volunteer basis on the board of directors and on the board’s committees.  Our (part-time) Executive Director develops strategies and plans and, together with our (part-time) Director of Volunteer Services and many volunteers, ensures their implementation.

A Wider Circle

This #GivingTuesday, whatever you give will be DOUBLED or TRIPLED. All donations will be matched dollar for dollar – with gifts of $1,000 or more receiving a 2-for-1 match, up to a total of $30,000 to support our new Partnership to Independence Program!

ArtStream, Inc.

Few theatres provide challenging arts opportunities for adults with disabilities and fewer still encourage them to be artists as well as audience members. ArtStream’s six Inclusive Theatre Companies invite actors with intellectual and developmental disabilities to collaborate with theater professionals and trained volunteer mentors to develop and present original musical theatre productions. Participants can also take theatre-based classes to boost self-confidence and strengthen communications and social skills. And the arts can heal, just as they can educate and entertain. Partnerships with schools, community organizations, and others ensure that adults and children can access the arts in a way that is meaningful, powerful, and healing. Your contribution makes it happen.

Friends of the Silver Spring Library

Friends of the Library, Silver Spring Chapter (FOLSS), is an all-volunteer organization of people who care about our library. FOLSS raises money to augment public funding for programs, materials, and equipment at the Silver Spring Library. We raised funds to pay for the state-of-the-art Early Literacy Center on the Silver Spring Library’s fifth floor; we also fund programming for Summer Reading, Library Lovers’ Month, and various other teen and adult programs during the year. Every dollar of donated funds goes directly to programming, materials, and services that benefit our local community.

Crossroads Community Food Network

Crossroads Community Food Network is building a healthier, more inclusive food system in our community. At the heart of this integrated network of food growers, makers, and consumers is Crossroads Farmers Market, where nutrition incentives make healthy food more affordable and at the same time helps support local farmers and vendors — 3/4 of whom are immigrants themselves.

Go Brent Team’s 3rd Annual Winter Clothing Drive!

Go Brent Team is kicking off our 3rd annual winter clothing drive. Over the past two years with your help, we’ve collected thousands of winter items including new or gently used coats, hats, gloves, scarves and boots. These items are delivered to the Montgomery County’s Down County Consortium’s Linkages to Learning programs and A Wider Circle.

A Wider Circle and Linkages to Learning can accept items ranging from infant to adult sizes, as both programs offer services to the entire family.

Please help us help our neighbors in need. If you have new or gently used items, message us on Facebook, send an email to Beth, or visit our GBT website.  You can leave items on your doorstep and we will swing by to pick up. We plan to collect now through January, so just let us know when you have a bag ready!

It was amazing how warm it was yesterday — it was downright balmy. Well that warmth was certainly gone today. This cold and rainy day was a reminder of last year’s dreary winter, which was the impetus for Go Brent Team’s winter clothing drive. We kicked off our annual drive last month and it’s well underway. We’ve already dropped off dozens of coats, hats, boots and more. Our recipients are A Wider Circle and MCPS Linkages to Learning programs at Pine Crest/Montgomery Knolls ES, Broad Acres ES and Silver Spring International MS.

We are still collecting gently used or new winter items. If you have items to donate, message us on Facebook or send us an email. You can leave items on your doorstep and one of our team members will swing by to pick up! Since both A Wider Circle and Linkages to Learning support the entire family, we can accept any winter items ranging from infant to adult sizes.

We’ll continue collecting donations through January in an effort to keep our neighbors warm!

Go Brent Team Welcomes Kathleen Dobson

Go Brent Team is excited to introduce the newest member of the team, Kathleen Dobson. As our marketing assistant, Kathleen will help coordinate Go Brent Team’s listings as well as assist with other marketing efforts. Her time will be divided between the office and working at GBT properties throughout Silver Spring, Takoma Park, and Kensington.

Go Brent Team and A Wider Circle

Kathleen previously worked in the field of recruitment and business development including eight years at the New Zealand Embassy where she met her husband Jason (who hails from New Zealand). She’s lived in the DC area for 24 years, eight of those in Woodside Park. Her sons, Aidan and Liam, attend Woodlin Elementary School.

Kathleen previously held a MD Real Estate license and speaks both Spanish and French! She’s been busy coordinating our annual winter clothing drive, picking up donations from clients and delivering them to A Wider Circle and the Linkages to Learning Centers at Montgomery Knolls/Pinecrest ES, Broad Acres ES, and Silver Spring International MS. We’ll be collecting items all winter so if you have a donation to make, email Kathleen to arrange for pickup.

Welcome Kathleen!

Go Brent Team Winter Coat/Clothing Drive

Last year Go Brent Team collected hundreds of winter items including new or gently used coats, hats, gloves, scarves and boots. All of the items were delivered to Downcounty Consortium schools’ Linkages to Learning programs and A Wider Circle.

We are kicking off our annual drive this week and would like your help. How?Gather gently used or new items; message us on Facebook or send us an email. You can leave items on your doorstep and one of our team members will swing by to pick up! Since both A Wider Circle and Linkages to Learning support the entire family, we can accept any winter items ranging from infant to adult sizes. Last year we also collected $500 in donations and purchased hat and glove sets for elementary school kids. If you prefer to make a donation, send us a message and we’ll coordinate pick up. We’ll continue collecting items and donations through January.

The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for a colder, wetter winter so let’s band together and keep our neighbors warm!

We are hoping we can count on your support to help stock A Wider Circle with basic essential items. We’ll be collecting donations through May. Send an email to Beth@GoBrentTeam.com and we’ll arrange to swing by and pick up your donation. We’ll be collecting items for the next two weeks or if you prefer, you can drop you off donations directly at A Wider Circle – 9159 Brookville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910.
